Choose from the three options according to whether the verb needed describes:

1) natural or public future events;

2) decisions taken quickly (=on the spur of the moment) – both ‘will’;

3) things which you can see will occur at any moment;

4) plans and intentions – both ‘going to’;

5) arrangements – ‘am/is/are –ing’

Cross out the two wrong answers in each group in bold type

Example:

Look, that kite is falling / is going to fall / will fall in a moment!

Now try these

1. The Prime Minister is to visit India next month. He is attending / is going to attend / will attend the meeting of The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)

2. Halley’s Comet will re-appear / is going to re-appear / is reappearing next in 2061

3. Bella Fields will increase / is increasing / is going to increase her training schedule in preparation for the Olympic Games.

4. My sister will take / is taking / is going to take the university exams in June.

5. I’m going to have / I will have / I’m having my hair cut this afternoon.

6. I’m sorry Simon, I haven’t finished yet. I’ll let you / I’m letting you / I’m going to let you have the article as soon as it’s done.

7. A: ‘This isn’t working, is it, Jack?’

    B: ‘It doesn’t look like it, I must say’

    A: ‘All right, we’re going to try / we’ll try / we’re trying it the other way round to see if that’s any good.’

8. If Bella trains this hard, I have a feeling she’s going to burn out / she will burn out / she is burning out before she reaches the Olympics.

9. Yes, this one’s a bit expensive. Actually, I think I’m having / I’ll have / I’m going to have  the one I tried on first, thank you.’

10. Scientists are predicting that global temperatures are rising / will rise / are going to rise by 2 degrees C by 2050.

11. Those bags look ever so heavy. I’ll carry / I’m carrying / I’m going to carry them for you, if you like.

12 A: ‘I’m going to take / I’m taking / I will take Paula’s dog for a walk this evening – do you want to come?

     B: ‘Thanks but I’m studying / I’m going to study / I will study some English this evening.’

13. A: ‘Is it true that you will watch / are watching / are going to watch the match tonight?

      B: ‘Maybe. Several people from work are going to watch /  will watch / are watching it at the pub, so I said I may join them. Are you going to be / will you be / are you being back in time for it?’

      A: ‘Well, my plane is due in at 4pm, so I definitely hope so.

14. A: I’ll get / I’m getting / I’m going to get some chips, do you want anything?

      B: ‘Oh yeah, I’m having / I’ll have / I’m going to have a cheeseburger. Cheers!

15. You’ll put / you’re putting / you’re going to put on weight if you go on eating like that!

16. A: ‘Can I get the roses next month when I have the money?’

      B: ‘Well, sir, I’m afraid it’s going to be / it’s being / It’ll be too late to plant them next month, they need to go in the garden now.’

17. A: ‘Are you seeing / are you going to see / will you see Hannah this weekend?’

      B: ‘Well, that’s the arrangement -  if nothing goes wrong.’

18. I’m afraid something is happening / is going to happen / will happen if you don’t get the car serviced before we go on holiday.

19. We’re going to put / we’ll put / we’re putting  a fountain in at the bottom of the garden – what do you think?

20. In the year 2012, London is hosting / will host / is going to host the 30th Olympic Games.
