Intermediate English grammar practice exercises: introduction to -ing clauses

 

Correct positioning of –ing clauses.

 

Look at the sentences below and consider their meaning carefully. In six of them, what is written is not what the writer was trying to say. Find these six and re-write them so that the meaning can be read correctly from them. Use the examples in E3-09W if you are not sure how to do this.

NOTE: As well as necessary changes in the word order, you may make small changes in the words or punctuation if necessary.

 

1.    Paul found his dog answering an advertisement in the local paper.

 

 

2.    Diana recognised several old friends looking around the room.

 

 

3.    Jack found the £50 note lying in the road.

 

 

4.    The injured man was picked up by the ambulance men lying in the road.

 

 

5.    The door was answered by a tall woman wearing faded blue jeans.

 

 

6.    She recognised her childhood home searching through old photographs.

 

 

7.    I came across the carpet in our living room surfing the internet.

 

 

8.    Buying a pair of shoes, Jenny realised that prices had gone up again.

 

 

9.    Paul realised that, turning out of the driveway, the car had a flat tyre.
