In the following sentences, there is either one main and one subordinate clause, or there are two co-ordinate clauses. Bracket each clause and mark it M, S or C accordingly. Underline the conjunction.

Examples: (We plan to visit Venice)C and (we intend to spend a night in Florence).C

  1. Are we going to the beach, or are we staying in?
  2. I’ll be late, darling, so don’t wait up for me.
  3. Will you give me a call when you get off the plane?
  4. I have a meeting with Bob at 11am and I’m driving to London after lunch.
  5. We’re going to the cinema tonight unless my car is still being repaired.
  6. I tried to call you back, but you were out.
  7. We can climb up to the ridge, then we can walk all the way along.
  8. Since I got home, the dog hasn’t stopped whining.
  9. I’ll have another of those cream cakes if you don’t mind.
  10. Before you book the holiday in Tunisia, can I have a look at the brochure?
  11. I’ve just bought a book and I’m reading it in a café.
  12. It’s still raining but I’m going out.
  13. I will not authorise this cheque, Mr Hill, nor will I increase your overdraft.
  14. As they arrived on the platform, the train was just leaving.
  15. She lit another cigarette, then dialled Tony’s number again.
  16. I won’t be at work tomorrow because I’m going to the dentist’s.
  17. Shall we take a rescue cat or would you prefer kittens?
  18. If I get home before the shops close, I’ll buy a chicken from the deli.
